A Minor Symphony in Bees

I caught up with my friend Margaret Evans’ performance in ‘A Minor Symphony in Bees’. It is part of the 2008 Rhubarb Festival (February 27th - March 2nd at 8pm) at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre — see artsexy.ca for details.

Margaret Evans

As usual with Margaret’s shows, I show up at the last minute not knowing what to expect or where to sit. As it turns out that last bit was important as the play starts with the cast sitting amongst the audience. First one cell phone goes off, then the next, then the next. I was initially like wtf? then I sat back for 30 minutes and enjoyed a cacophonous riot of overlapping mobile phone conversations. It was like getting a sustained hit from the voyeuristic crack that is overheard in New York.

The funny thing was — at least for me — my tendency to automatically tune-out other peoples’ conversations is now a reflex. People do you really need to take that call when I am next to you on the streetcar? I lost the thread a couple of times before realizing that it was the authenticity and quality of the writing that was making me zone out. The irony.

The Now.
