(Back to) The School of Life: Author Charges to Teach ‘Class’

A Reuters story from August 3 popped up in the paper today. Apparently author Alain de Botton is charging $400 per head for the general public to attend ‘classes’ on topics he has authored books about. The arrangement is part of a new effort by artists and writers in Bloomsbury called the ‘School of Life‘.

If he is not on staff already, Mark Kingwell should open a chapter in Toronto. Perhaps with help from the folks at Type books.

Thanks for mentioning The School of Life. However, I should correct your piece in case anyone gets the wrong idea. The School of Life is a group effort by many different people and I personally have made only very minor contributions to the design and teaching of any courses. Therefore, to say that The School of Life merely regurgitates in course form what I had previously written in course form severely misunderstands what the school is about. Hi Alain — Thanks for taking the time to make this clarification.
In looking over my post, it is imprecise but perhaps not incorrect?

The point in writing it was NOT to say that you were regurgitating anything (my sincerest apologies), but instead to highlight that you were making money — as an author — from something other than a bookstore transaction.

I am particularly interested in how authors (and publishers) will adjust when the publishing industry switches from being obsessed with supply, to one focused on demand.
Your Heathrow series is generating demand for your ideas AND it is making you money. A neat trick and a great example for others.
I hope the regular readers of my site understood my post in that light.
I admit to being a wee lazy by not making that exactly clear.

Beyond including your comment on the post, let me know if you would like me to do anything else to remedy the situation.

Best regards,
Mark B.
