Bezos to Blame? He isn’t Driving the Bus. Consumers Are.

Tricia Duryee over at PaidContent notes that publishers may be getting uneasy about Amazon’s market dominance. Actually she is simply echoing the New York Times. The Times says publishers are scared Bezos is going to demand cheaper ebooks for the Kindle.

Am I the only one that thinks it is only natural that ebooks be cheaper than printed books? Can anyone at a publishing house really defend pricing their ebooks at parity with the print editions — the dominant pricing strategy? Come on. It is protectionist. Admit it.

Bezos is going to demand that ebooks be cheaper. He will. Does that make him the cause of the downward pressure on book prices — surely not. Will publishers continue to blame him? Absolutely. Bezos is the dog on the front of the mac truck that is about to drive over book prices. He will be the last thing slow-footed publishers see before they get trampled.
