I think publisher-driven innovation rarely lives up to its potential because publishers, often themselves quite trend-driven, are too busy trying to catch up with the latest shifts in technology.

A mobile-friendly website may have been great -- but without an over arching strategy or even a vision of what they want to define their readers experience as ... each tool that is created and each tactic that is used will gradually fall to the wayside. Why? Because publishers continue to focus on "how" we need to do something currently and what "should" be ... rather than focusing on the experience that they want to define and create for their readers.
