Echo Chamber: Indigo Books Should Buy Borders

Borders LogoMichael Cairns is reading the tea leaves at his PersonaNonData blog after Borders’ latest quarterly report. I have always understood “the rumors of a cross border combination” to mean Borders would buy Indigo. Indigo rescuing Borders is a new one for me. I can’t see there being any advantage for Indigo’s business in such a deal. But Gerry is a ninja when it comes to bad debt. The only way I can figure a Borders acquisition would make sense is for Gerry and Heather personally. If they wanted out of the book business, owning Borders could be the crowbar they need to pry open the foreign ownership laws. Buy Borders then turn around and sell Indigo’s Canadian stores in a bait and switch for regulators. Unlikely but you never know.
