F(r)eedbooks for the Kindle

Merlin Mann summarizes his latest MacBreak Weekly pick over on 43 folders. He offers three ways to get free books on the Kindle.

What got my attention about his pick was Feedbooks. As Merlin describes on the show (but not very well in his post) a Kindle user can download a single file to the device that contains links to other books.

The file acts as a micro-store embedded in the device. From the way Merlin described it (I don’t have a Kindle so I can’t see for myself) this is a major crack in Amazon’s walled garden.

The fact that developers are now prying open Amazon’s platform is healthy. I hope Bezos welcomes the hackery.

Merlin also gives props to manybooks, Andy Ihanatko’s post on the device, and The Kindle blog.

I also recommend Joe Wikert’s Kindleville blog for everyone looking to stay current on all things Kindle.
