Gary Hustwit’s Objectified
Gary Hustwit made a great documentary about Helvetica that I would recommend to any book person. I saw the doc a few years ago and since then he has released a follow-up — Objectified — where he applies the approach he used for typography to talk industrial design.
From a business model perspective, Objectified is interesting because Hustwit presold a special edition DVD to all the fans that enjoyed his first film.
I also thought it was interesting that two of the twenty design-thinkers in the film cited the moon landing as primary influence for them becoming designers. 1969 was a big year for both Marc Newson and Karim Rashid. “Building [that] positive future” through design is how Rashid explains it. It made me wonder what kind of event today would inspire upcoming designers to design for sustainability rather than the space age.
