Google Book Search Now Explicitly a Canadian Issue

Picture 7The amended Google Book Search settlement was submitted to court yesterday. Among the changes “Canadian rightsholders are joining the case as named plaintiffs and will also be represented on the Board of the Book Rights Registry.”

Hmm.

I wasn’t expecting a parallel court case in Canada but I was expecting some iteration on the original deal. Now we get lumped in. If I understand this correctly, this expands the original scope of the agreement from Canadian books available in the US to all Canadian books. No discussion. And while we do share common heritage with US, we do have different copyright law, so the thing that bothers me about this is it assumes homogeneity and where it is assumed, it eventually is. F**k! I was worried already about the slippery slope from here to ACTA and WIPO amendments.

So now that Canadians are plaintiffs do we have extra time to make objections? I bet not.
