How Many Book Publishing Execs Have Used iTunes?
John Temple, the former editor of Denver’s Rocky Mountain news, gave a talk at Google headquarters on the lessons learned from the closing of the paper. What is remarkable about his presentation is they appeared to do everything right — they were online early (like 1990) and they kept it up. But they were participating but weren’t understanding. They were responsive but they had no strategy. The more I read testaments like this, the more I am convinced digital agitation at the mid and lower levels of publishing houses won’t work. The CEO needs to be driving the boat. Only top down change can get a company to change course for the better. The slides are at slideshare and a transcript is available on John’s blog — Temple Talk.
