Just noticed: Indigo.ca Has a New EVP

The good folks at Chapters/Indigo made some changes to their website this week. Among the noticed differences is the change to the Management listing for the company. Michael Serbinis, Chief Information Officer, is no longer listed on the company roster. Nor isĀ  Senior Vice President for Online Carolyn Beatty. Both, to the best of my knowledge, are still with Indigo. Serbinis remains the head of IT and the head of Shortcovers, but his oversight of the online division appears to have been dropped. In his place the roster now lists Andrew Sloss as the EVP of Online — superseding Beatty.

Sloss is a heavyhitter from eBay. He went one-two with former ebay.ca chief Jordan Banks to deliver a domestic ebay site in Quebec. When Banks left ebay, Sloss replaced him. Now Sloss has moved to Indigo. This signals a renewed commitment to the online division, a division that appeared to be rudderless in the wake of the community launch, the debut of Shortcovers, and the heavy burden of a high US exchange on orders from Ingram.

Now hopefully we will see the company start dynamic sourcing online orders. Hopefully they will finally change the “temporarily unavailable” messaging to actually be meaningful. Hopefully they will improve internal site search. And maybe, if they are not too busy, they can integrate ebooks into the main site in a meaningful way. That is my long-time wish list. I am sure Sloss has his own.

Apropos of nothing, I wonder if Shortcovers is now headed for the promised spin-off?

In any case, it will be interesting to see how Sloss shapes the site. I guess the obvious place to look for evidence will be the used books marketplace…
