Learn About Book Publishing: Author Edition

There is publishing school for aspiring publishers and there is writing school for aspiring writers, but if you are a writer that wants to know about publishing where do you go? My former colleague Tammy Sturge faced this question when her and her two friends wished themselves down the road to authorship. They had a book idea and they knew just enough about book publishing in Canada to be dangerous. They consulted friends and those friends talked to other friends and soon it was decided to host a day long seminar on the book publishing process for new authors.

The day, titled “How to Cook Your Book“, is next Wednesday November 4, 2009 at the Verity Club (8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.)

Trevor Dayton oversees childrens books (and other things) at Indigo. He is going to speak about what Indigo looks for when buying a book. Andy Walker from Labrats.tv fame is a new-media guy and author. He will likely speak about where the two meet. Agent Sam Hiyate will talk, as will M&S editor Trena White. Author I.J. Schecter — whose most recent writers credit is a book of golf anecdotes from a major Canadian publisher — and lawyer Mitch Kowalski from the Toronto Writers’ Centre will cap the day.

All speakers have volunteered their time but there is a fee to attend that covers the venue and lunch. For price and registration information see the HowtoCookYourBook page at sellyourevents.com
