Media M&A: A Primer for Book Publishers

Brian O’Leary, founder of Magellan Media Consulting, gave a talk at this year’s Book Expo America for book publishers looking to acquire internet companies. He made a comment that particularly rang true for me about keeping an open mind regarding the accounting when looking at a such a company. I once had a very difficult time convincing book publishing executives that internet economics made sense for them. it would have been great to have heard this podcast at that time.
O’Leary also listed ways that book publishers could show themselves to be friendly to potential acquisitions:
- move quickly (a difficulty for many book people)
- establish a reputation for getting deals done
- talk up your core strength — linking content with markets
- treat past acquired companies fairly
- talk up your ability to merge companies successful — both culturally and financially
- demonstrate you willing to spend the money
