MySpace Music Model Bad for Unsigned Talent
I am just catching up with last week’s news regarding MySpace’s music space.
As Arrington says..
In case it isn’t abundantly clear - the big labels are all but giving up on charging for recorded music. Instead they’re trying to grab equity stakes in the distribution channels that directly touch consumers.
This makes me think of why terrestrial radio sucks so bad — no new talent. If the labels were to take over digital distribution what incentive would they have to sign new artists? Their profits would be stable as would their talent pool.
If I was an indy band or a struggling writer looking to break into such a model I would have to pay-to-play. That seems a little screwed up to me.
