publishers have hesitated historically to mess with the retail channel and I recall in the early days of the internet there was a lot of discussion about publishers creating channel conflict with existing retailers if the publisher set up their own store front.

Uh yeah. Those conversations from the early days of the internet were never resolved. Publishers are still gun-shy about going direct to consumer. It is funny, the fear of upsetting retailers has only gotten worse the fewer retailers there are.
