Reback: Google Wants Money From School Children

PBS has a great 8 min. summary of the GBS settlement. Attorney Reback, who is against the settlement, wants us to think of the children. Google Book Search engineer Dan Clancy says something equally stupid. He claims nothing is preventing a scanning competitor from taking on Google. Oh really Dan, don’t you think being in court for five years might be a wee barrier to entry? Great summary regardless.

Just for record, the Internet Archive has been scanning hundreds of thousands of books for libraries and other clients for years now. The difference (aside from a generally higher-quality end-product) is that the Archive only scans works that are in the public domain.
