The Penguin Design Awards
I am a big fan of illustrated covers. The publisher I used to work for didn’t have any illustrators on staff, so covers tended to be stock photos and type-treatments. I am also a big fan of student work. It is often better than in-house work. The kids are hungrier. Here is my favourite from the second annual Penguin Design Awards…

The artist is Tom McGill. Here is his explanation of the work…
My design for the cover of The Shock Doctrine is to get across the idea of disaster, terrorism and hidden information. The book refers to the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries, so the cover represents a city collapsing but the image has been shredded to hide the information from the public. The typeface is simple and allows the imagery to be the strongest element, although on the front cover the typeface works with the image to look like another skyscraper.
