Tim O’Reilly: Where Is The ISBN Table In The Sky?

I was just catching up with Robert Scoble’s interview with Tim O’Reilly.

Near the end, Scoble asks about cloud computing. O’Reilly references a conversation he had with Jeff Bezos where Bezos expressed confidence that Amazon could beat Google and Microsoft in cloud services because cloud computing is a low margin business – like the book business.

At minute 23:00 O’Reilly says something really interesting. He urges companies to go up the stack and develop data services instead of scrapping it out for low margin cloud services. He cites as an example the huge data set of ISBNs that is controlled by Bowker. If that moved to the cloud it wouldn’t have to be duplicated or localized anywhere else. Breaththrough.
